What is NELMA?
NELMA stands for the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association. It was established in 1933 and is considered as the recognized authority for establishing grading standards for Eastern White Pine lumber as well as Eastern Spruce, Balsam Fir, and Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPFs) grouping, along with other eastern softwood lumber species with commercial significance. NELMA also provides certification for export wood packaging materials and serves as a leading voice for the wood and lumber industry in Northeastern United States and Canada. This organization is accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee(ALSC) as a lumber rules grading authority in the Northeast.

- i. NELMA has established their standard grading rules for northeastern softwood lumber products. These grading rules are established to conform to American Softwood Lumber Standard PS20. NELMA has developed a grading rule book that contains the Standard Grading Rules for Northeastern Lumber. It is available at the NELMA website for easy reference to lumber and timber grades.
- ii. NELMA has also established Standard Grading Rules for Eastern White Pine lumber. It provides a set of descriptions for defining the limiting characteristics that are allowed for each grade. The standards describe the poorest conditions acceptable for certain applications. Standard Grades for Eastern White Pine are basically classified into the following categories:
- Selects. There are two grades for Selects- C Select and D Select. Grade C is considered as the highest NELMA pine grade with appearance showing high quality. Therefore, lumber stamped with this grade are mainly used for natural and stained finish, fine woodworking and interior trim. Grade D takes its appearance from Select and Common grades. Both grades are usually combined in a single marketed group called D & Btr Select.
- Commons. There are four grades for the Eastern White Pine Common- Finish, Premium Standard and Industrial. Finish and Premium grades are determined for their good appearance. The Standard and Industrial are lumber grades used mainly for construction purposes. Standard Grade lumber may be used for coarser rustic decorative purposes while the Industrial grade lumber is chiefly used for rough construction where appearance and strength are not that essential.
